From John: Someone else will have to answer A J's question as to whether or not the acorn nuts have a shoulder or not. Mine do not have the shoulder and I will investigate on an original spare (no it is not for sale, Victor) engine. I have always got my acorn nuts from the Classic Car Club of America, but don't know if they still sell them. I too am looking for a source for head gaskets and manifold gaskets.
Well I couldn't stand the suspense so I went to my garage and looked at my three cars and at the spare engines. What I have on all of them for head stud 'nuts' are plain chromed acorn nuts and a chromed flat washer............no shoulder. A J , I think I would forget the shoulder. By the way when you are getting acorn nuts, the thermostat housing is supposed to be attached with studs, like as with the head, with chromed acorn nuts, and I think, a flat washer beneath the acorn nut

I've ordered one of these to see how it works. A couple of my studs seem short and will need to be replaced when the head is off as they will not bite with a washer.

The machinist I know told me not to use Stainless Steel nuts . On the head as they expand at different rates ? ?

Interesting, I did not know that. We have used stainless in the past with no problems. I would not think given the size of the nut and the amount of expansion possible it would be an issue but maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about!

"This is what I ended up using for acorn nuts. It is a two piece setup, the nut & washer.

Tim suggests restoration supply: The web site is www.restorationstuff.com you can download the catalog. They have a lot of unique items. I purchased acorn nuts both from Grainger and MacMaster Carr, they weren't close enough for my standards.
