MATS FOR CLUTCH/BRAKE AREA and MATS FOR SHIFTER/EMERG BRAKE

1 / 5
Well, I think we have accomplished quite a few 'projects' since begining the Royale forum.Today is a milestone of sorts because I received a pair of mats from Keith Lee for the area around the clutch/brake pedals and the area around the shifter and emergency brake area. I have been 'working' on getting these made for between 12-15 years since I started communication with Ralph Bowyer of Dearborn, MI who is the former owner of the beautiful 'plum' convertible that was sold 5 or so years back to a man from Canada who promply (to Ralph's chagrin) disassembled the 100+ point car and painted it silver with black fenders. the man died before the car was finished and it is rumored to have sold to ????for the $350-374,000 range which made it the highest reported sale of a Royale. Ralph had promised to lend me the molds he used to make these mats but 'he never could find the molds'.In previous communications via the email chain prior to the forum being established we discussed that the original mats that I sent to Keith Lee to duplicate had diamond shaped design, a slightly larger pattern on the mat for the brake/emergency brake lever than on the mat surrounding the clutch/brake pedals.Keith found a large mat that he used for the pattern for the shifter/emerg brake mat and that mat came out in my humble opinion, indistinguishable from the original. I am very happy with it. It has imperfections but so did the original. On the other hand, I am 90% satisfied with the mat for the clutch/brake pedal area. Keith Lee also thinks this mat can stand some improvements. I really appreciated his attitude in accepting constructive criticism. The problem Keith had in making this mat is that he could not find a large enough mat of this smaller diamond design, so he had to piece it together like floor tile and you can see the seams (if you look real hard at it) and one part is slightly higher than the other. In all reality if it were on the floorboard, under the dash nobody but us would know. Keith has suggested that we consider using the same design diamond shape on both mats and the mat will come out considerably nicer. On on hand we want things to be authentic. On the other hand we want to be practical. Since either would be a huge improvement over what we all have now, and since the difference is so small, I think I am leaning toward having both made of the same larger diamond shape. I wouldn't doubt for a minute that is the way REO meant for it to be but one or the other of the suppliers messed up.What do you guys think.
