Radios and heaters on Royales
I got the Reo Echo recently, and was gladly surprised to see a lot of Royale coverage, which unfortunately is not normal. Among the interesting stuff, I found this:MARCH/APRIL 1985 Submitted by Harold Cooper, Member #302 :
" The mention of early car radios brings a local VT. incident to mind. A well known St. Albans, VT., doctor bought a new Reo- Royale 8-35 Victoria for a wedding present. It was his third REO, after a 1922 T6B 4p Coupe and a 1927 Flying Cloud A 2-4p Coupe that was rebuilt at shop into a station-wagon for him after it was wrecked. The doctor had a new convenience, a hot water heater, installed in the Reo-Royale that first winter. Enjoying many trips, twice across the continent, the doctor desired a radio. There was not space for both heater and radio under the Royale's instrument board. So, there was but one solution. Each spring the heater was removed and radio put in for extended summer travels. Each fall, until WW II, it was the reverse procedure. "From what it says, there is no room for both in a 8-35 Victoria (though I take it it is the same in all Royales as they all seem to have the same cowl and dashboard in 8-35s, and only a different dash on 8-31s).Would anybody know what type of radio, if there was ever one offered originally, did Royales used?S
ame question for heater.
Thanks!victor
